Exquisite River is a collaborative project I curated from the artists’ collective, Think About Water, thirty-five artists who interpret, celebrate and protect water. To make something collective and honor each artist’s distinctive vision, they chose the format of a Surrealist game called exquisite corpse: each artist draws a body part, then folds, the paper so it can’t be seen, until finally the paper is opened and the figure appears. The twenty-five TAW artists created an exquisite corpse—not of a human body, but of a river. Each artist made a section of river in their own studio, medium, style and vision, without seeing each other’s work.
Assembled as a sequence of images at Ely Center for Contemporary Art in New Haven, CT, this spring, the exhibition presented a river snaking across the walls, made by many hands, telling many stories. The project offered new understanding of rivers to audiences, and connected the artists in a shared effort to create something larger.
My contribution was Source, an abstraction of a spring since springs are the source of most rivers.
